How this site is funded

A reader is entitled to know who pays for what they are reading, and what that money can and cannot buy.

The short version

The Clearance Model is free to read and is funded by advertising. It may in future also earn commission when a reader buys software through a link that is marked as such. Neither of those things gives anyone the ability to influence what is published.

There is no paywall, no subscription, no newsletter list sold to sponsors, and no arrangement under which a company pays to be written about.

Display advertising

Display advertising on this site is or will be served through Google AdSense.

  • Advertisements are chosen and placed by Google, not by the publisher. I do not know in advance which advertiser will appear beside which article, and I have no relationship with the companies whose advertisements you see.
  • Every advertisement is labelled. None is styled to resemble editorial text, a link within an article, or a navigation element.
  • At most two advertisement positions appear inside the body of an article, however long the article is. None sits above the headline.
  • Every position reserves its height before it loads, so the page does not move under you while you are reading.
  • Until a publisher account is live, no advertisement position renders anything at all — no box, no border, no label, no reserved space. If you are reading this before advertising is switched on, there is nothing on the page pretending to be an advertisement.

Google and its partners may set cookies or read device identifiers to select and measure advertising. Inside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, none of that happens until you have given consent through the consent dialogue. Some articles may in future contain links to software or services that pay a commission if you buy after following them. Where that happens:

  • The link is marked at the point of use, not only in a note at the foot of the page.
  • The article says plainly that the link is commercial.
  • The price you pay is not affected.
  • The recommendation, if there is one, is the one that would be made without the commission — and where that cannot honestly be claimed, no recommendation is made at all.

Software in this market is bought after a procurement exercise, not after clicking a link in an article, so this is a small part of the funding and is likely to stay that way.

What money cannot buy on this site

This list is the whole point of the page.

  • Coverage. No company can pay to be written about, reviewed, listed or compared.
  • Position. No company can pay to appear first, or to appear at all, in a comparison.
  • Removal. No company can pay to have criticism removed, softened or delayed. Factual corrections are free and always have been.
  • Links. Links are not sold, exchanged, rented or inserted. Every outbound link on this site is there because the document at the other end of it supports a sentence.
  • Advance sight. No advertiser, sponsor or affiliate partner sees an article before it is published.
  • Guest posts. Not accepted, in any form, at any price.

Why this matters more here than on most sites

Compliance software is sold against a deadline. The commercial incentive in this market is to make every date sound imminent, every obligation sound broader than it is, and every problem sound like one only a platform can solve. A publication funded by that industry, however carefully written, is structurally unable to say "this does not apply to you yet" or "you may not need to buy anything".

Advertising through an exchange is the least entangled funding available. The advertiser does not know which article they are appearing beside, and I do not know who they are. That is a weaker relationship than sponsorship, and a weaker relationship is the feature.

Conflicts of interest

The publisher of this site does not sell, resell, implement or support electronic invoicing software, does not operate an access point or a platform, and holds no shareholding in any company in this market. If that ever changes, it will be stated here and in every article where it is relevant, before anything else is published.
